Spinal Decompression Q & A

What Conditions Does Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Treat?

Non-surgical spinal decompression can treat a wide range of issues, including herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, and facet syndrome. It may also be used as part of rehabilitation and therapy after a patient has surgery.

How Does Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Work?

Non-surgical spinal decompression relieves pain and pressure in the spine. It works by gently enlarging the area in between the vertebral discs. During a non-surgical spinal decompression procedure, the patient will recline comfortably on the treatment table. A harness-type device is attached to the patient’s lower body, and the chiropractic care provider will then adjust the decompression machine to the levels best suited for the patient. During the therapy, a gentle but persistent force will be applied, slowly pulling the spine apart to provide the pressure release needed for the discs. This is not a painful process, although patients may have a pulling sensation that doesn’t cause pain.

What Other Treatments Work With Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?

There are several other treatments that may be used in conjunction with non-surgical spinal decompression. Many patients have heat treatments, cold treatments, and electrical muscle stimulation during their non-surgical spinal decompression treatments. When done in combination, these treatments can provide the highest degree of pain relief possible.

How Is Surgical Spinal Decompression Different From Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?

Surgical spinal decompression includes surgeries like laminectomy and microdiscectomy. These surgeries do require anesthesia and recovery time. With non-surgical spinal decompression, treatments are performed in the chiropractor’s office and require no downtime and no medications at all.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

This will depend on each patient’s specific condition and situation. Most people need a series of non-surgical spinal decompression treatments, with some relief usually being achieved within the first few (usually three to seven) sessions. The total number of sessions needed will vary.
